Argon Welder
Job Description
The carbon steel (ferrous metal) welder using argon root welding (TIG/GTAW) is a specialist who performs the most critical part of joining pipelines and high-pressure vessels — the root pass. Applying the root pass with argon on carbon steel ensures the weld is smooth and defect-free on the inside.
Responsibilities
- Root pass: Ensuring full penetration on the inside of the pipe and preventing "icicles" or voids.
- Bevel preparation: Opening pipe ends at a 30-37.5 degree angle and cleaning the beveled edges to bare metal.
- Root gap adjustment: Setting the correct distance (usually 2.5–3.2 mm) between two pipes and fixing it with tack welds.
- Gas flow control: Correctly regulating argon gas flow to protect the weld pool from atmospheric air.
- Fill and cap passes: Completing the remaining passes (hot pass, fill, cap) after the root pass.
- Visual inspection: Checking the weld's geometric dimensions and confirming there are no undercuts or porosity.
- Reading drawings and WPS: Selecting current strength and wire type according to the welding procedure specification (WPS).
